What the customer noticed
The customer was preparing for a camping trip to North Carolina when the front-bedroom GE air conditioner began running without producing cold air.
Diagnostic findings
What inspection and testing revealed
After allowing the air conditioner to operate for approximately 20 minutes, Keith measured the compressor’s electrical draw at 5.38 amps, substantially below the manufacturer’s 8.5 RLA specification. Inspection found no debris, obstructions or restricted airflow. However, the capillary tubes were freezing immediately before entering the evaporator coil. The unusually low compressor amperage, freezing at the evaporator inlet and absence of an airflow restriction indicated a sealed-system problem consistent with a low refrigerant charge.

Sunset Mobile RV Repair completed electrical and temperature testing, inspected the interior air-distribution components and opened the rooftop unit to rule out restricted airflow. Because sealed rooftop RV air conditioners are generally replaced rather than recharged, a replacement GE air conditioner was ordered.

Where the service call stands
The diagnosis was completed and the customer was able to continue with the planned North Carolina trip. Sunset Mobile RV Repair will return to install the replacement air conditioner after the customer returns, allowing the RV to be ready for an upcoming camping trip to Bristol Motor Speedway.
